Baseball falls on the road to Penn State Harrisburg

MIDDLETOWN, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team fell to Penn State Harrisburg, 7-1, in a non-conference road contest on Wednesday afternoon.

Berks drops to 5-4 on the season, while Harrisburg improves to 6-2-1 overall.

Harrisburg took advantage of a two-out error to keep its inning alive in the bottom of the third inning. The home squad was able to plate four unearned runs to grab a 4-0 lead in the early going.

Berks got a run back in the top of the fourth after back-to-back singles by Dante Salerno and Mason Pennypacker. Freshman Justin Welch doubled to right field to score Salerno from second base. Harrisburg got a pair of strikeouts to end the threat and leave two Berks runners in scoring position.

Harrisburg tacked on two runs in the fifth inning and tallied its final run in the bottom of the seventh. Berks was able to get baserunners over the final two innings, but combined to leave five runners and score no runs in those frames. For the game, Berks left 10 runners on base.

Toby Welk finished 2-for-4 with a double, while Welch went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. Salerno and Pennypacker recorded the other two hits of the game for Berks.

Drew Skrocki tossed the first 2.2 innings of the game, scattering three hits and allowing four runs (none earned) and striking out one. Ben Wanner threw 4.1 innings of effective relief and struck out two batters. Brandon Chun had one strikeout in one scoreless inning of relieve.

The Nittany Lions will host their home opener with a doubleheader against Muhlenberg College on Saturday, March 16 at 12 p.m.
