Baseball picks up sweep over Eastern

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Penn State Berks baseball team continued its strong start to the season with a pair of wins over Eastern University on the second day of the Ripken Experience. The Nittany Lions made a late comeback to force extra innings in a 6-5 win in game one, followed by a big first inning in a 15-5 victory in the nightcap.

The Nittany Lions (4-0) received solid pitching performances in both games and the offense provided plenty of firepower all day.

In the opener, Eastern took a 5-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning. The first two Berks batters of the inning got out, leaving the Nittany Lions down to their final out. Austin Madeja reached base on an error to prolong the game and Dalton Hughes followed with a single to keep the rally going. Toby Welk smacked a double to drive in both runs and make it a 5-3 ballgame. Dante Salerno and Mason Pennypacker both drew walks to load up the bases. Tate Yergey then drove in a pair of runs with a single to even the score at 5-all.
