Baseball splits with Wells; Welk becomes all-time hits leader

READING, PA - Toby Welk became the all-time hits leader in program history with a monster day at the plate as the Penn State Berks baseball team split its doubleheader with Wells College on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The Nittany Lions dropped the opener 13-9, but bounced back with a 24-7 victory in the second game of the twinbill.

Welk finished with three hits in the first game to raise his career total to 200 hits, which was tied with Tyler Fleischut for the program record. Welk smashed a home run to center field with his first at-bat of the second game and added four more hits to give him 205 hits and counting. For the day, Welk went 7-for-10 with two doubles, two home runs, nine RBI, and six runs scored.

In the first game, Berks jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings, but the Express (7-11, 2-1 NEAC) chipped away at the deficit with one run in the third and five in the fourth. The Nittany Lions (10-8, 1-2 NEAC) tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up 9-6. Wells answered right back with three runs in the fifth and two runs in both the sixth and seventh to go ahead 13-9.

Dante Salerno went 3-for-4 with one triple, one RBI, one runs scored, and one stolen base. Eric Gale was 2-for-3 with three RBI and runs scored, while Nick Esz and Welk each added two hits.

The second game saw Wells crack the scoreboard first with a run in the top of the first. Berks responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, beginning with a two-run homer to center by Welk. Later in the inning, Gale drove in Mason Pennypacker, who reached on a walk a batter earlier.

After a shutdown inning by Alex Laudenslager in the top of the 2nd, the Nittany Lions offense sent 18 batters to the plate. They scored 13 runs behind six hits, one Wells error, six walks, and two hit batters. Welk ripped a grand slam to left center field and later laced a double off the fence in left field to score two more runs. Salerno recorded a pair of doubles in the inning, while Pennypacker also added a double and Joe Gramignano had a bunt single.

Berks extended its lead to 20-1 after recording four runs in the fourth inning. Pennypacker had an RBI double, Austin Madeja drove in two runs with a double to right field, and Tyler Kreitz had an RBI single. Pennypacker drove in three runs in the seventh as he tied the single-game school record with his third double of the game. The final run for Berks came in the eighth inning when Pat Maloney was hit by a pitch to force in Gramignano from third.

Laudenslager picked up the win on the mound after allowing three runs on eight hits, while striking out four batters in 7.0 innings of work. Ben Wanner struck out two batters in the final 2.0 of the game.

Welk finished 5-for-5 with one double, two homers, eight RBI, and four runs scored. The five hits recorded in a game are the most of Welk's career, while his eight RBI are the third most he has recorded. Pennypacker went 3-for-5 with three doubles, two RBI, and three runs scored, while Salerno was 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI, three runs scored.
