Baseball falls to Wells in extras

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team suffered a 13-10 setback in 10 innings to Wells College in both teams North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener on Friday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions (9-7, 0-1 NEAC) led 3-0 after three innings and had built an 8-2 cushion by the end of the fourth. But the Express (6-10, 1-0 NEAC) chipped away at that deficit with three suns in the sixth and another three in the seventh to even the score at 8-all. Wells went ahead 10-8 after tallying a pair of runs in the top of the eighth.

After two quick outs in the top of the eighth, Berks got a rally started beginning with a single to right field by Mason Pennypacker. Dante Salerno followed with a line drive double in the right center gap that scored Pennypacker from first to make it 10-9. Eric Gale followed with a fly to right center that landed in between three defenders and was able to score Salerno with the tying run.

In the top of the ninth, the Express had the go-ahead run on second base with two outs, but Drew Skrocki recorded a strikeout to end the inning. In the bottom of the ninth, Dalton Hughes had a one-out double down the left field line and moved up to third base on a bunt single by Austin Madeja. Madeja moved up to second with a stolen base to eliminate the possibility of an inning ending double play. The Wells pitcher forced a ground out to second that was hit too hard for Hughes to attempt to score. The Express elected to intentional walk Toby Welk to load the bases and the moved paid off as the Express forced an inning ending groundout to the third baseman.

In the 10th, the Express had a leadoff infield single followed by a line drive single to right field and the next batter was hit by a pitch with an 0-2 count to load the bases. Tyler Young then delivered a bases clearing double to cap off his day of going 5-for-6 with six RBI.

Derek Shea shut down the Nittany Lions in the bottom of the 10th to secure the victory for the visitors.

Salerno finished the game 3-for-6 with two doubles, one triple, three RBI, and three runs scored. Madeja was 3-for-5 with a run scored and two stolen bases, while Gale finished 2-for-6 with four RBI and a run scored. Welk added two hits, three runs, one RBI, and one stolen base, while Pennypacker also added a pair of hits and scored once.

The two teams will complete their three-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow at 1 p.m.
