Baseball has win streak snapped in setback to Moravian

BETHLEHEM, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team saw its three-game win streak come to an end after falling to Moravian College, 12-0, in a non-conference contest on Wednesday afternoon at Gillespie Stadium.

The Nittany Lions drop to 9-6 on the season, while the Greyhounds improve to 10-7 overall.

Moravian grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, which saw a hit batter, two balks, one Berks error, and three hits. The Nittany Lions got out of the inning when catcher Tyler McGarvey gunned down a runner trying to steal second base.

Starting pitcher Dale Murphy settled down after the rough opening and only allowed two hits and two base runners of the next three innings of work. He finished the day with five hits allowed and three runs surrendered, while striking out two batters in a season-high 4.0 innings of work.

The Greyhounds extended their lead to 7-0 and starting pitcher Eddie Olsen was cruising on the mound for the home squad. Berks finally got to the right-hander when Toby Welk lined a single to left field to open the top of the 7th inning. Mason Pennypacker followed with a single through the middle and Pat Maloney loaded the bases with a bunt single down the third base line. Olsen then induced an infield fly out and got an inning ending 6-4-3 double play to escape the jam.

BRADEN GLAD, BRANDON CHUN, and MATT WAGNER combined for four inning of relief for Berks. TATE YERGEY was hit by a pitch, drew a walk, and recorded his second stolen base of the season.

The Nittany Lions will enter NEAC play this weekend when they host Wells College for a three-game set. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 30 beginning at 1 p.m., followed by a single game on Sunday at 12 p.m.
