Nittany Lions score in bunches in sweep of Gettysburg

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team had several big innings at the plate and the pitcher's put up plenty of strikeouts in a doubleheader sweep of Gettysburg College on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The Nittany Lions held off a late rally in a 15-10 game one victory and followed that up with an 8-1 triumph in the nightcap.

The Bullets (7-6) cracked the scoreboard first in the opening game with a three-run home run by Joe Giovinco in the top of the first. But The Nittany Lions (9-5) responded with a six run effort in the bottom half of the first. Mason Pennypacker delivered an RBI single to score Austin Madeja with the first run and Toby Welk scored the second run off an error later in the inning. Tyler Kreitz delivered the big blow with a bases clearing double and then scored as the Gettysburg outfielder threw the ball out of play.

Hunter Sentz set the Bullets down order in the top of the second and the offense picked back up where they left off in the first. Pennypacker lined a single back up the middle to plate Madeja and Dalton Hughes, who both singled earlier in the inning. Kreitz and Nick Esz each drew bases loaded walks to force in two more runs. Madeja drove in a pair of runs with a single to center field and Hughes capped off the 8-run inning with a single to right field to put Berks ahead 13-3.

The Bullets got three runs back int he top of the third inning, but the damage could have been worse. With runners on second and third, Eric Raio laced a single down the left field line to score the runner from third, but Madeja fired to Kreitz, who gunned out the runner at home plate the second out.

Gettysburg combined for four runs over the sixth and seventh inning to cut the deficit to 14-10. With things getting a little more interesting, the Nittany Lions tacked on another run in the bottom of the seventh to expand the lead to five runs. That run, however, came at the expense of a triple play turned by the Bullets. With bases loaded and no one out, Justin Welch hit a low liner that landed just in front of the shortstop, who flipped the ball to the second baseman for out one and he relayed to first for the second out. In the meantime, Welk came in to score from third, just before the final out was recorded at third base. Since the final out was not a force, the run from third did count.

Drew Skrocki struck out four batters in the final two innings to secure the win for Berks. Sentz earned the win after striking out three batters in three innings of work. Justin Butler surrendered just two hits and one run, while matching a career-high five strikeouts in three innings. Ben Wanner tallied one strikeout in one inning of work. That quartet combined for a season-high 13 strikeouts, easily surpassing the previous best of eight strikeouts.

Pennypacker went 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Kreitz was 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Madeja, Hughes, and Welk all recorded a pair of hits and Madeja scored a game-high three runs.

The second game started out a pitcher's dual, but Berks broke things open with a 6-run third inning. Welk had a line drive fall in front of the right fielder to score Kreitz and Noah Kurtz with the first two runs. Pennypacker continued his strong day with a single up the middle to bring in Madeja and Welk. Eric Gale delivered a sacrifice fly to deep right field to bring in Pennypacker and Welch doubled down the right field line to score Dante Salerno, who singled earlier in the inning.

Gettysburg scored its lone run of the game in the top of the fourth, but the Nittany Lions responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Welk drove in Madeja with a single through the left side and Hughes later scored on a passed ball to make it 8-1.

Jamie Glass turned in a stellar performance on the mound in the second game. The sophomore right-hander finished one strikeout shy of matching his career-high after recording seven punchouts. Glass, who tossed a career-best 8.0 innings, scattered eight hits and surrendered just one run on his way to picking up his second win of the season. Corey Hennessey tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning to finish off the sweep.

Welk went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two stolen bases, while Madeja and Hughes both had two hits.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Moravian College for a non-conference contest on Wednesday, March 27 at 4 p.m.
