Baseball pulls away late in win over Lebanon Valley

ANNVILLE, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team combined for eight runs in the seventh and eighth inning on its way to picking up a 10-5 victory on the road over Lebanon Valley College on Tuesday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improve to 7-5 on the season, while the Dutchmen drop to 9-3 overall.

LVC put up a three spot in the bottom of the second inning to build an early lead. But Berks responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to make it a 3-2 ballgame. With two outs, Dante Salerno reached on a bunt single and moved up to second on a walk to Eric Gale. The two pulled off a double steal to move into scoring position. Hunter Sentz singled through the right side to score Salerno and Gale also came around when the right fielder misplayed the ball.

The Dutchmen extended their lead to 4-2 with a run in the bottom of the fourth and held onto that lead until the seventh inning. Berks loaded the bases after a couple of walks and a hit batter. Dalton Hughes forced in Sentz with a bunt single, followed by Austin Madeja and Noah Kurtz scoring on an error. Salerno capped off the four run inning with a single to right field to score Toby Welk and give Berks a 6-4 lead.

LVC tallied a run in the bottom of the seventh to get within one run, but the Nittany Lions responded with another four spot in eighth to build a comfortable five run cushion. Sentz drew a walk to open the inning and came in to score on a failed pickoff attempt. Tyler Kreitz, who was hit by a pitch, tagged up and scored on a fly out by Welk. MASON PENNYPACKER drove in Hughes and Madeja with a double to right field to finish off the scoring.

Alex Laudenslager tossed the opening 3.0 innings of the game and allowed three runs on four hits. Corey Hennessey picked up the win, his first with the Nittany Lions, after allowing just two hits and one run, while striking out five batters in 3.0 innings of work. Drew Skrocki recorded the first save of his career with one run and three strikeouts in the final 3.0 innings of the game.

Salerno went 3-for-4 with one RBI, one runs scored, and two stolen bases to lead the offensive attack. Hughes was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Sentz went 1-for-3 with one RBI, and two runs scored. Madeja was hit by a pitch three times, while Pennypacker, Kreitz, and Salerno were each hit once. In addition to being hit by a pitch six times, the Nittany Lions drew eight walks.

The Nittany Lions will host Gettysburg College in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday, March 23 at 12 p.m.
