Nittany Lions split home opener with Muhlenberg

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team split its home opening doubleheader with Muhlenberg College on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The Nittany Lions (6-5) took game one by a score of 6-3, but the visiting Muhls (7-4) came away with a 6-1 triumph in the second game to earn the split.

Berks received a dominant pitching performance from Hunter Sentz in the opening contest of the day. The freshman right-hander tossed a complete game with six hits and three runs allowed, while striking out four batters. Sentz improved to 2-0 and lowered his ERA to 4.50 on the season.

Sentz gave up a run in the top of the first inning when a fly ball got knocked down in the outfield by the wind to allow the runner to score from second base. In the second inning, Muhlenberg loaded the bases with no outs, but Sentz got a strikeout and a 4-6-3 double play to escape the damage. He pitched a perfect fourth inning, before the Mules put up a run in both the fifth and sixth inning to cut their deficit to three runs. Sentz fired off a perfect seventh inning to record his second complete game of the spring.

Dalton Hughes turned in a solid performance at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, one run scored, and one stolen base. Toby Welk went 2-for-4 with a double and drove in a run, while Eric Gale was 2-for-3 with a double, one run scored, and one RBI. Mason Pennypacker added two hits, one RBI, and one run scored. Pat Maloney was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a stolen base.

In the second game, the Mules scored five runs over the first two innings and starting pitcher Matthew D'Ambrosia was able to limit the Nittany Lions offense all game. Jamie Glass settled in after the shaky start by tossing 5.0 innings for Berks. Justin Butler tossed 2.0 innings of scoreless relief, striking out three batters and surrendering just two hits.

Hughes went 1-for-3 and scored the lone for Berks on a wild pitch in the first inning. Tyler Kreitz was 1-for-2 with a double, while Dante Salerno and Tate Yergey were each 1-for-3.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a non-conference contest at Lebanon Valley College on Tuesday, March 19 at 3:30 p.m.
