Hot shooting and strong defense propels WBB to win

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team received solid shooting on offense and the defense turned in a solid effort as the Nittany Lions defeated Cairn University, 88-58, in non-conference action on Monday evening at the Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions (6-12) trailed 7-6 in the early going, but claimed the lead at 9-7 when Deanna Daddona knocked down her first 3-pointer of the night. Berks would not relinquish the lead the rest of the evening, as they finished the first quarter ahead 23-12 and were ahead 42-21 at halftime. The Nittany Lions built a 24 point lead (64-40) at the end of three and closed out the final 10 minutes of play with a 24-18 edge over the Highlanders (10-11).

As a team, Berks shot 50.0% (37-of-74) from the floor and were 66.7% (8-for-12) at the free throw line. They held Cairn 34.4% (21-of-61) from the field and forced the visitors into 23 turnovers. The defense finished the game with 17 steals, led by Daddona with five and Kaitlyn Armstrong with three.

Daddona drained four 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 21 points. The senior guard grabbed six rebounds to go along with her five steals and two assists. Daddona did the bulk of her damage in the first half of the game, shooting 6-of-11 from the field - including 3-of-5 from long range - for 16 points.

Armstrong recorded 11 points, six boards, three steals, and three assists, while Kylie Herman chipped in 10 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Julia Bookwalter finished with nine points and seven boards, while fellow start Sam Brensinger added eight points, four assists, and three rebounds.

The Berks bench outscored the Highlanders by a 29-4 margin. Lex Schratt led the way for the second string with eight points on 3-of-5 shooting, followed by Abbie Carr with six points and four boards. Raven-Monet Kemper and Kristen Burdo each chipped in four points, while Whitney Allen, Nicole Kopcik, and Elise Paskowski added two. Sam Huggins converted on 1-of-2 shots from the free throw line to round out the Berks scorers.

Dakota Hitchner led the Highlanders with 17 points, six assists, and five rebounds. Victoria Stum and Aigner Bookard each tallied 10 points and combined for 11 rebounds.

The Nittany Lions will travel to New York for a pair of NEAC Crossover contests this weekend. They will face Cazenovia College on Saturday, February 9 at 1 p.m., followed by Morrisville State on Sunday, February 10 at 12 p.m.
