Women's basketball nipped by SUNY Poly

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team overcame a late double-digit deficit, but the comeback bid fell just short in a 70-67 setback to SUNY Poly in Saturday afternoon's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Crossover contest.

The Nittany Lions led 20-16 after the first 10 minutes of play and outscored SUNY Poly by one point in the second quarter to take a five point lead (37-32) into the intermission. The Wildcats used a 21-10 third quarter to go ahead 53-47 heading into the fourth. The visitors scored the first four points of the period to go up by 10 points and maintained that lead with 4:03 left in the game. Kaitlyn Armstrong hit a 3-pointer and Julia Bookwalter added a layup to make it 63-58 with 2:50 left. Berks got its deficit down to three points with 24 seconds left, but the Wildcats pushed their lead back up to six (70-64) with six second left. Kylie Herman knocked down a late 3-pointer, but SUNY Poly was able to run the final 2.2 seconds off to secure the win.

Herman finished with a contest-high 23 points to go along with three rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Armstrong notched a double-double after recording 19 points and 12 boards. Bookwalter finished with nine points, while DEANNA DADDONA added eight and Elise Paskowski had six.

As a team, the Nittany Lions had their third best single-game performance at the free throw line in program history after converting on 13-of-14 trips for a 92.9%. Herman finished 6-for-6 and Armstrong was 4-for-4, while Bookwalter went 3-for-4.

The Wildcats received 15 points from Kiersten Leos and Shannon Harrison to lead the offensive attack. Molly Burdick added 12 points, 11 boards, seven blocked shots, and three steals. Rylie Smith chipped in 11 points and six rebounds from the bench.

The Nittany Lions will host Cairn University in a non-conference contest on Monday, February 4 at 7 p.m.
