MBB holds off Penn College rally for 88-85 victory

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team got two clutch defensive stops to fend off a late rally in an 88-85 victory over Penn College in Wednesday night's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest.

Prior to the game, the Nittany Lions recognized Matt Seip with Senior Day honors as he played in his final home game for the blue-and-white.

The Nittany Lions held the lead through the majority of the opening period and took a 44-39 lead into the break after a heads up offensive rebound and putback by Hassan Darby. Out of the intermission, the Wildcats went on a 13-4 to take a four point lead (52-48) with 16:33 to play. Berks responded with a 25-5 run over the next eight minutes to build a 16 point cushion (73-57) with 8:32 to go. Penn College chipped away at its deficit and got to within single-digits (86-77) with 1:43 to play. Seip bumped the lead back up to 11 points after hitting a jumper with 1:34 to go, but the Wildcats made two 3-pointers and a pair of free throws to make it a one possession game at 88-85 with 41 seconds left. Penn College made a steal around midcourt, but the Nittany Lions defense forced a turnover with 17 ticks left on the clock. After Berks missed a foul shot, the Wildcats played for the final shot of the game to try to force overtime. Latrell Carroll and Brandon Wise double teamed the guard around the 3-point line and Wise recorded the steal to seal the victory.

All five of the Nittany Lions starters scored in double figures, led by Carroll with a 24 points. The freshman guard collected a game-high 11 rebounds to finish with his 15th double-double of the season. He shot 9-of-11 from the field and was 6-for-9 at the free throw line.

Seip finished the game with 14 points, 11 of which came in the second half. The senior guard notched six boards and two blocked shots as well. Steve Luchansky also recorded 14 points to go along with six assists and three steals, Monty Farmer chipped in 13 points, five rebounds, and a season-high six assists. Wise finished with 10 points, two assists, and two steals. Darby came off the bench to contribute 11 solid minutes in which he had eight points and five boards. As a team, Berks shot 50.0% (32-of-64) from the field and were 43.5% (10-of-23) from beyond the arc. In a game where every single point mattered, the Nittany Lions had a 70.0% (14-for-20) at the free throw line.
