WBB drops NEAC opener to SUNY Poly

UTICA, N.Y. - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team suffered a 69-50 setback to SUNY Poly in both teams North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (2-5, 0-1 NEAC) trailed 15-10 after the first quarter and trailed by 14 going into the halftime intermission. Out of the break, the Wildcats (3-2, 1-0 NEAC) their lead to 16 points with 7:52 left in the period, but Lex Schratt and Julia Bookwalter combined on seven straight points to narrow the deficit nine points (43-34). The Nittany Lions outscored SUNY Poly 14-7 in the third quarter to make it a seven point game going into the final 10 minutes. Nicole Kopcik narrowed the deficit to six points (50-44) and a pair of free throws by Abbie Carr had Berks within seven points (55-48) with 5:38 to play. That is as close as they would get as the home squad closed out the game on a 14-2 run to earn the win.

Katie Armstrong had a team-high 11 points to go along with eight rebounds, three steals and an assist. Kopcik chipped in 10 points with a team-high and career-best 11 rebounds to record the first double-double of her career. Bookwalter and Schratt both added nine points and the two combined for eight rebounds and three assists. Emily Clapper notched a game-high five steals to along with three boards and two points.

Molly Burdick led the Wildcats with 20 points and 20 boards, while Jaida Washington added 15 points and Kiersten Leos had 10.

The Nittany Lions will face Delaware Valley University in their final game of the fall semester on Wednesday, December 11 at 6 p.m.
