Armstrong powers Nittany Lions to win over Delaware Valley

DOYLESTOWN, PA - Katie Armstrong took over in the fourth quarter to lead the Penn State Berks women's basketball team to a 65-60 victory on the road over Delaware Valley University on Wednesday night at James Work Gymnasium.

The Nittany Lions finish off the fall portion of their schedule with a 3-5 record, while the Aggies drop to 1-7 on the season. Berks finished off a tightly contested first quarter with an 18-16 lead and outscored the Aggies by five in the second period to lead 37-30 at the halftime intermission. Out of the break, DelVal made eight field goals - including three 3-pointers - to take a 50-49 lead heading into the final period. The fourth quarter had four lead changes and two ties, but Berks put things away five points from the free throw line in the final minute of play.

Armstrong recorded 11 of the Nittany Lions 16 points in the fourth quarter. In addition, the junior guard registered five rebounds and a steal in the final 10 minutes of action. For the game, Armstrong notched 26 points, 13 boards, six steals, three assists, and one blocked shot. With the 26 points and 13 rebounds, she collected her first double-double of the season and seventh of her career. Armstrong established a career-high with her point total, while matching her personal-best in rebounds.

Julia Bookwalter added her second double-double of the season and fourth of her career after scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Elise Paskowski shot 5-of-8 from the field to finish with 12 points, while also pulling down seven boards. Nicole Kopcik rounded out the Nittany Lions scoring in double figures with 10 points, to go along with five rebounds and three steals. Sam Brensinger dished out a team-high four assists and had five rebounds.

Lauren Moretti matched Armstrong with a game-high 26 points to go along with nine rebounds and three steals. Sarah Wills added 16 points and Shayne Glenn finished with 11 points and a team-high 11 boards for the Aggies.

Berks shot 36.8% (25-of-68) from the floor and 23.5% (4-of-17) from 3-point range, while the Aggies wer 31.9% (13-of-37) from the field and 35.1% (13-of-37) from beyond the arc. The difference of the game came at the foul line, where the Nittany Lions went 11-for-21 and DelVal was just 3-for-12.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a non-conference game at the University of Valley Forge on Wednesday, January 8 at 5 p.m.
