Women's basketball drops home opener to Alvernia

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team made a late push, but the rally came up short in a 77-65 setback to Alvernia University in non-conference action on Wednesday night at the Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions (0-2) struggled early on and found themselves down 18-9 at the end of the first period. After a much stronger performance on both ends of the court, Berks was able to knot the game at 33-33 at halftime.

The Wolves (3-0) went ahead 56-48 at the end of three and built 21 point cushion (69-48) with 4:03 left in regulation. Kaitlyn Armstrong recorded 12 points over a two and a half minute stretch to pull the Nittany Lions within seven (72-65) with 1:18 to play, but Alvernia went 5-for-6 at the free throw line down the stretch to secure the win.

Armstrong went 11-for-11 at the free throw line and 5-of-10 from the floor to finish with a team-high 22 points. In addition she had four steals, three rebounds, three assists, and one blocked shot in 34 minutes of action. Sam Brensinger made a pair of 3's and finished with 10 points, while Destiny Infante followed with seven points. Julia Bookwalter, Nicole Kopcik, and Abbie Carr all chipped in six points. Bookwalter pulled down a team-high seven boards and matched Armstrong with a team-high two blocks.

The Wolves were led on offense by Gabriella De Vito with 29 points, followed by Dee McCormick with 13 and Torie Zerbe with 12. Zerbe also pulled down a contest-high 18 rebounds, eight of which were on offense.

The Nittany Lions will compete in the McDaniel College Invitational this weekend. They will face host McDaniel on Friday, November 15 at 6 p.m. and will face either Juniata College or Thiel College on Saturday, November 16.
