Women's soccer tops Keuka to claim Regular Season title

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team defeated Keuka College, 4-0, and in doing so claimed the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Regular Season Title on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions won their seventh game in a row to improve to 12-6 overall and 10-0 in the conference, while the Wolves drop to 12-4 on the year and 9-1 in the NEAC. This marks the seventh time in eight years that Berks was the NEAC Regular Season Champions. They will earn a first round bye and will host the final four of the NEAC Tournament on November 9 and 10.

Berks came out firing from the start with five shots and five corner kicks over the first 19:55 of the contest, but had nothing on the scoreboard to show for it. Following a Keuka foul, Megan Jardine ripped a direct kick past the wall of defenders and out of the reach of the keeper to give Berks a 1-0 lead at 21:31.

The Nittany Lions added to that lead when Sara Hathaway headed a ball over the defenders and JoJo Zolli beat the keeper with a shot inside the far corner in the 36th minute.

Hathaway set up the final tally of the first half with a nice pass to Karina Raykova, who drilled a close range shot past the keeper to make it 3-0 at the 44:35 mark.

In the second half, Emily Clapper had a shot saved, but Jardine scooped up the rebound and put it into open right side of the net in the 51st minute.

Zolli and Raykova each collected their sixth goals of the season, while Jardine's two scores puts her at five on the year. The two assists by Hathaway gave her nine for the season, which is tied with Jardine for the team lead.

The Nittany Lions possessed the ball for the bulk of the contest thanks to the strong play from forward's Alexis Schoener and Hathaway, and the midfield efforts from Jardine, Charlotte Pizzuto, Clapper, Zolli, and Jeyda Duran. The defensive unit of Raykova, Emily Stump, Lydia Cacciola, and Kristi Cox played lights out to help Leslie Estrada earn her 12th win of the season.

For the game, Berks outshot the Wolves by a 23-3 margin (15-0 on goal) and held a 14-2 advantage on corner kicks.

The men's soccer squad teamed up with the women's team to host their annual Pink Game fundraiser. The two teams combined to raise $167, which will all go to the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.

The Nittany Lions will wrap up the regular season with a home game against Wells College on Saturday, November 2 at 2 p.m.
