Men's soccer drops 1-0 heartbreaker to Keuka

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 heartbreaking setback to Keuka College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference contest on Friday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions drop to 4-6-3 overall and 3-5-2 in the NEAC, while the Wolves improve to 6-9-1 on the season and 5-5 in the conference. With today's results, Berks is eliminated from postseason contention as Keuka has now wrapped up the sixth and final playoff spot.

Berks looked like it had an early goal when Nate Nguyen beat the keeper inside the left post, but the side official called offsides to negate the score at the 4:25 mark.

The Wolves tallied the lone goal of the contest at 12:39 when Seth Spurgeon headed a corner kick by Damian Rutan into the left side of the goal. Right after the score, Keuka worked the ball down field and had a shot on target, but CARTER LAM was there to make the save.

Nguyen had a shot stopped in the 31st minute and Ayden Lee had a shot sail just over the crossbar in the 34th minute for the best remaining scoring chances of the first half.

In the second half, Jose Aparicio made a save in the 49th minute to keep Berks within striking distance.

Brenden Valverde took a free kick from 40-yards out in the 65th minute that took a diving effort from Ryan Mavretish to knock away.

At 83:48, Nguyen had a shot from the left side of the box hit off the inside of the right post and Luke Romanoski's shot on the rebound went wide right of the target.

Aparicio made a leaping save on a shot in the 88th minute on a long shot by Rutan.

Berks outshot the Wolves by an 8-6 margin, though Keuka had a 4-2 advantage on shots on goal. The Nittany Lions recorded six corner kicks, while Keuka had five.

The men's soccer squad teamed up with the women's team to host their annual Pink Game fundraiser. The two teams combined to raise $167, which will all go to the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.

The Nittany Lions will wrap up the 2019 season with a home game against Wells College on Saturday, November 2 at 12 p.m.
