Men's soccer closes out season with first ever win over Wells

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team closed out the 2019 season with a 4-1 victory over Wells College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (5-10-3, 4-5-2) earned its first ever victory over the Express, ending a 12-game losing streak to the conference opponent.

Brenden Valverde got Berks on the scoreboard just 1:32 into the opening period. Tyler Dell played a ball over the defenders and Valverde took one dribble and deposited a goal inside the left post to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead.

The Express (5-13, 2-9 NEAC) battled back with a score by Christian Garavito in the 11th minute to even the match at 1-all.

Valverde put the Nittany Lions back on top with an unassisted score at 19:54. Alex Khaldaoui gave Berks some more breathing room with a goal in the 32nd minute off a feed from Luke Higgins. The score was Khaldaoui's first of the season.

Valverde netted a goal off a pass from Alex Williams in the 81st minute to record his first hat trick of the season. The junior forward finished the season with a team-high 11 goals and raised his career total to 44, which is tied with Mike Zopfi for the most in program history.

Carter Lam earned the win in net after notching five saves in the first half, while Jose Aparicio finished with four stops in the second half. The Express received eight saves from goalkeeper Colton Jaquith.

Berks outshot the Express by a 19-15 margin (12-10 on goal), while Wells had a 7-1 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions finish the year 5-10-3 overall and 4-5-2 in the conference. They bid farewell to four-year standout Jakob Fischer, who finished his career ranked second in program history for games started (72) and minutes played (6103), while ranking third for games played (72). Berks is set to return the bulk of its team next season and will look to make it back to the NEAC postseason.
