Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Jardine nets game-winner in overtime to edge Scranton

READING, PA - Sara Hathaway sent a pass wide to Megan Jardine, who placed a shot over the keeper's head, just under the crossbar, and into the far back corner to give the Penn State Berks women's soccer team a thrilling 1-0 overtime victory over visiting University of Scranton on Wednesday night.

The Nittany Lions improve to 7-6 overall, while the Royals drop to 5-3-3 on the year.

Both teams squandered some scoring opportunities over the first 90 minutes of action to send the game to overtime. In the extra frame, Scranton earned a couple of corner kicks, but could not find the golden goal. Late in the period, the Royals attempted to clear the ball out of their defensive end, but the ball was played back into the box to Hathaway. Hathaway played the ball through some defenders and Jardine unleashed the game-winner at the 98:36 mark of the game. The goal was Jardine's first of the season, while Hathaway recorded her fourth assist of the year.

Leslie Estrada finished the contest with seven saves in net, while her counterpart Amanda Steinberg had one save. Estrada made several key interceptions on attempted crosses and corner kicks throughout the contest. The freshman keeper made her biggest stop of the night when she came off the end line and made a sliding stop on a breakaway by Grace Elliott in the 86th minute.

Alexis Schoener fired off a nice shot on target in earlier in the second half, but the keeper made a diving stop to keep the match scoreless at the time.

Estrada was helped out by the defensive play of Karina Raykova, Emily Stump, Lydia Cacciola, Emily Clapper, and JoJo Zolli. Jardine, Charlotte Pizzuto, Emily Clapper, and Jeyda Duran were resilient in the midfield as they transitioned back-and-forth on offense and defense all game.

The Royals, who are ranked No. 8 in the Mideast in the most recent regional poll, outshot Berks by a 15-10 margin, while the Nittany Lions held a 6-4 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will travel to New York for a pair of NEAC contests this weekend. They will face SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday, October 12 and SUNY Poly on Sunday, October 13.
