Women's volleyball tops Gwynedd Mercy during Pink Game

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team turned in a solid offensive performance en route to a 3-1 victory over visiting Gwynedd Mercy University in a non-conference contest on Tuesday night at the Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions (9-9) won by game scores of 25-17, 19-25, 25-18, and 25-21. In addition, Berks' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted its annual Pink Game fundraiser to benefit the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County (www.bcssberks.org/). The Nittany Lions wore pink t-shirts to help raise awareness, while also collecting donations at the door and during the match with a serving contest. They were able to raise $125.95, which will all go toward to the nearby organization.

Natalie Dwyer, Syd Himmelberger, and Zoe Barna combined for 45 of the Nittany Lions 61 kills. Dwyer and Himmelberger each tallied career-highs in kills, with Dwyer recording a game-high 21 kills and Himmelberger following with 14. Barna finished the contest with 10 kills, while Blair Eckel chipped in seven. Julia Rathsam dished out a 48 assists, while also gathering 16 digs and two service aces. Madison Hetrick, Jenna Plitnick, and Dwyer all notched one ace.

Defensively, the Nittany Lions had five members record 11 or more digs. Eckel had a team-high 17 digs, followed by Rathsam with 16 and Plitnick with 14. Dwyer registered 12 digs and Marie Durkota had 11 to round out the Berks players recorded double digit digs.

The Nittany Lions will host NEAC pool play on Saturday, October 12. Berks will face reigning conference champion Morrisville State at 12 p.m. on Court 1, while Cazenovia College and Penn College will play on Court 2 at the same time. At 2 p.m., Berks takes on Cazenovia on Court 1 and Morrisville State will play Penn College on Court 2.
