Volleyball splits a pair of NEAC contests

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team started the day off with a 3-0 victory over Cazenovia College, but later dropped a 3-0 decision to Morrisville State to earn a split in a pair of North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon at the Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions are now 10-10 overall and 3-3 in the NEAC after the split.

In the win over the Wildcats, Berks won by game scores of 25-14, 25-19, 25-17.

Natalie Dwyer and Zoe Barna each had a game-high eight kills, followed by Maddie Deloglos with six and Syd Himmelberger with five. Julia Rathsam recorded 27 assists, nine digs, five service aces, three block assists, and two kills. Jenna Plitnick had a game-high 14 digs, followed by Marie Durkota with 11. Blair Eckel and Plitnick both added two aces.

Berks battled in all three sets against the Mustangs (14-5, 6-0 NEAC), who are the two time reigning NEAC Champions. In the opening set with the match knotted at 22-22, Morrisville State was able to claim the win with a 3-1 run to win 25-23. Berks led 20-19 late in the second game, but six straight kills by the Mustangs gave them a 25-20 win and a 2-0 lead in the match. The third game was no different, with Berks leading 21-19 late in the game. The Nittany Lions had three straight errors and the Mustangs closed the match on a kill and an ace to take the set 25-21.

Dwyer led the offensive attack for Berks with 11 kills, while Himmelberger followed with eight and Eckel had six. Rathsam handed out 27 assists and notched a team-high 15 digs. Barna recorded nine digs, followed by Dwyer and Plitnick with seven apiece.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Albright College for a non-conference contest on Tuesday, October 15 at 6 p.m.
