Second half surge powers Berks to win over Harrisburg

READING, PA - After being held scoreless in the opening half, the Penn State Berks women's soccer team broke through for three second half goals for a 3-0 victory over Penn State Harrisburg in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon.

Berks improves to 6-6 overall and 5-0 in the NEAC, while Harrisburg drops to 5-6-1 on the season and 3-1-1 in the conference.

Berks racked up 14 shots, eight of which were on target, in the first 45 minutes of action, but Harrisburg keeper Hannah Williams was there to make to the stop each time.

In the second half, Emily Clapper put a well placed pass between to defenders to lead Alexis Schoener toward the goal. The sophomore forward took a couple of dribbles and beat the keeper with a shot inside the right post for a 1-0 lead at the 50:47 mark. It was Schoener's team-best eighth goal of the season, while Clapper recorded her third assist of year.

In the 73rd minute, Megan Jardine's corner kick was headed inside the right post by Lydia Cacciola for her first goal of the season.

Berks capped off its scoring in the 79th minute when Jardine sent a free kick into the box and Karina Raykova headed past the keeper for a 3-0 lead. The score was Raykova's fourth of the season, while the two assists bring Jardine's total to four this year.

Leslie Estrada made a save on the only Harrisburg shot on target, while Williams finished with 11 saves for the visitors.

Berks outshot Harrisburg by a 25-4 margin (14-1 on goal) and held a 3-1 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will host the University of Scranton in a non-conference contest on Wednesday, October 9 at 7 p.m.
