Men's soccer holds off Cazenovia

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team stayed in the postseason hunt with a 3-2 victory over Cazenovia College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improve to 4-9-3 overall and 3-4-2 in the NEAC, while the Wildcats fall to 4-8-2 on the season and 1-7-1 in conference play. Keuka College is ahead of Berks for the sixth and final playoff spot with a 4-5 NEAC record.

Berks tallied a pair of goals just 2:32 apart to build an early 2-0 lead in the first half. Ayden Lee recorded his ninth goal of the season off of a cross by Alex Khaldaoui at the 21:43 mark. Brenden Valverde added an unassisted goal at 24:15, the score was his ninth of the season.

The score would remain 2-0 in Berks' favor until the 79th minute, when Zach Schlachter found the back of the net to make it a one-goal difference. Nate Nguyen gave the Nittany Lions some breathing room when he scored off of a throw-in by Valverde at the 80:33 mark. The two-goal lead was short lived at Cazenovia's David Andreasson scored at 81:37 to make it 3-2.

The Wildcats managed one corner kick and three shots over the final 8:23 of the contest, but JOSE APARICIO made one save and the Berks defense kept Cazenovia from tying the contest.

CARTER LAM made two saves in the first half en route to earning the win in goal, while Aparicio finished with two stops in the second half. Cazenovia keeper Maurice Tessmann finished the match with 10 saves.

Berks outshot the Wildcats by a 22-21 margin (13-6 on goal) and held 5-4 advantage on corner kicks.

With a goal and an assist, Valverde became the men's soccer program's all-time leader in points with 99 (41 goals, 17 assists). He surpasses Mike Zopfi, who had 97 points (44 goals, nine assists) while playing for Berks from 2006-09.

The Nittany Lions will host Keuka on Friday, November 1 at 1 p.m. as the teams battle for the final playoff spot. On Friday, the men's and women's soccer teams will host their annual Pink Game with all proceeds benefiting the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.
