WVB falls in five for second time in three days

WILKES-BARRE, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team dropped a five-set decision for the second time in three days after falling 3-2 to Wilkes University in a non-conference contest on Thursday evening.

The Nittany Lions (13-12) suffered a 25-19 setback in the first set, but responded with at 25-21 triumph in the second. The Colonels (13-14) grabbed the third set by a score of 30-28 before Berks forced a decisive set with a 27-25 win in the fourth. The clinching set went back-and-forth before Wilkes came out on top by a score of 16-14.

Zoe Barna collected a season-high 23 kills, which is tied for the fifth most kills in a single-match in program history. Sarah Nichols notched a career-high 12 kills, followed by Blair Eckel with nine and Natalie Dwyer with eight. Julia Rathsam dished out 47 assists and had a team-high 26 digs, while Dwyer added 18 digs and Eckel had 16. Barna, Nichols, and Syd Himmelberger each chipped in three block assists. Dwyer registered a game-high five service aces and Eckel added three.

As a team, the Nittany Lions tied the single-game program record with 59 assists. The 61 kills collected by the team was tied for the second most in school history, while the 12 block assists were tied for the 10th most in a single-game.

The Nittany Lions will battle for their postseason fate with a pair of NEAC contests on Saturday afternoon at Penn College. Berks will face Wells College at 2 p.m., followed by a tilt with Keuka College at 4 p.m.
