Volleyball sweeps a pair of NEAC games in New York

UTICA, N.Y. - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team picked up a pair of crucial North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) wins on Saturday in upstate New York. The Nittany Lions opened the day with a 3-0 victory over SUNY Cobleskill, followed by a 3-0 win over host SUNY Poly.

Berks is now 13-10 overall and 5-3 in the NEAC, which places them in a four-way tie for fourth place.

In the win over Cobleskill, Berks won by scores of 25-12, 25-20, 25-12 to earn the sweep. Zoe Barna and Blair Eckel led the way with nine kills apiece, followed by Natalie Dwyer with eight and Syd Himmelberger with seven. Julia Rathsam handed out 31 assists and tied Dwyer for the team lead in digs with 14. Eckel added 12 digs and Jenna Plitnick had 11. Plitnick also recorded a game-high six service aces.

In the second game, Berks held off a late Wildcats rally for a 25-23 triumph in the first set. The Nittany Lions then closed the match out with a 25-12 and 25-22 triumph in the second and third. Barna had a game-high 11 kills, while Himmelberger added 10 and Dwyer eight. Rathsam dished out 27 assists to go along with 14 digs and four aces. Dwyer and Marie Durkota each finished with 13 digs.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Muhlenberg College for a non-conference contest on Tuesday, October 22 at 7 p.m.
