Volleyball finishes strong in 3-1 win over Harrisburg

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team started out strong, cooled off a little, and then closed out the match in dominating fashion during a 3-1 victory over Penn State Harrisburg in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Tuesday night at the Beaver Community Center.

Berks (8-9, 2-2 NEAC) took the opening game by a 25-14 score, but Harrisburg (9-6, 3-1 NEAC) evened it up at 1-all with a 25-19 victory in the second game. Berks responded with a 25-19 and 25-10 triumph in the final two games to clinch the win.

In the fourth game, NATALIE DWYER took over serving with the score 10-8 in Berks' favor. From that point, Dwyer served 13 straight times and Berks built its lead to 22-9 to put the match out of reach. During that run, Berks had six kills and two aces, while Harrisburg committed four errors.

As a team, Berks racked up 44 kills and committed just 17 errors to finish with a .233 hitting percentage. They also registered 13 service aces and had 5.0 total blocks.

Zoe Barna had a game-high and personal-best 15 kills, while Maddie Deloglos and Blair Eckel both chipped in 10. Dwyer added eight kills, to go along her career-best six service aces. Julia Rathsam had 39 assists, 10 digs, and two block assists. Sarah Nichols and Syd Himmelberger each finished with one solo block at the net. Marie Durkota and Jenna Plitnick both recorded three service aces.

The Nittany Lions will return to action on Tuesday, October 8 at home against Gwynedd Mercy College. The women's volleyball team will be hosting its annual Pink Game on that date, with all proceeds benefiting the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.
