Women's basketball topped by Abington

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team used a late surge to the tie the game heading into the final 10 minutes,but Penn State Abington finished the game strong at the foul line to pick up an 83-76 win over Berks in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division contest on Wednesday evening.

Berks (5-11, 4-7 NEAC) trailed 23-17 at the end of the first quarter, but outscored Abington (11-7, 8-2 NEAC) by four points in the second period to pull within two points (39-37) going into the break. Berks won the third quarter by a 22-20 margin to head into the fourth tied 59-all. The teams exchanged leads early in the final period, before Berks went up by three points (67-64) with 6:56 to play. Abington responded with a three pointer to tie it and would go ahead for good with 5:34 left. Berks hung in the game and trailed by as little as two points (78-76) with :40 second left, but Abington would should 6-of-7 at the foul line in the final :20 seconds to seal the win.

Julia Bookwalter tallied 23 points, marking the second time in three games that she surpassed 20 points. The sophomore forward pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds to tally the first double-double of her career. In addition, Bookwalter swatted five shots, which was a career-best is tied for the fourth most blocks in a single-game in program history.

Kaitlyn Armstrong also turned in a strong all-around performance, finishing with 19 points, eight boards, four assists, and four steals. The sophomore guard shot 7-of-11 from the floor in 32 minutes of action. Kylie Herman rounded out the Berks players scoring in double figures with 14 points. She also had six rebounds and dished out a team-high five assists. Deanna Daddona added nine points, five rebounds, and four assists.

Abington had four players score in double figures, led by Shayna Rodriguez with 23 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists. Laquana Nagbe added a double-double with 19 points and 10 boards.

The Nittany Lions will host SUNY Poly in a NEAC Crossover contest on Saturday, February 2 at 1 p.m.
