Fourth quarter surge leads women's basketball past LBC

LANCASTER, PA - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team erased a double-digit second half deficit after outscoring Lancaster Bible College 20-7 in the final period to give the Nittany Lions a thrilling 62-57 come-from-behind victory in Wednesday night's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest at Horst Athletic Center.

The Nittany Lions (5-7, 4-3 NEAC) trailed by 17-4 late in the opening period, but were able to fight back to make it a 19-8 score heading into the second period. The Chargers (3-13, 1-6 NEAC) maintained their 11 point lead as both teams registered 15 points in the second quarter. Berks outplayed the Chargers by a 19-16 margin the third period to cut down the deficit to eight points (50-42) entering the final 10 minutes of play.

Deanna Daddona tallied the first two points of the fourth quarter, but Becca Lucente responded with a 3-pointer to put the Chargers up nine with 7:51 to play. From there, the Nittany Lions went on an 11-0 run to take their first lead of the game (55-53) with 2:03 left. Lex Schratt started the scoring spree with a jumper, followed by a pair of 3's by Daddona. Nicole Kopcik tied the game up with a jumper in the paint and Kylie Herman put Berks ahead with a layup. In that stretch, the Berks defense held the Chargers to 0-for-7 shooting from the field and forced four turnovers.

With the Nittany Lions clinging to its two point lead, both teams had empty possessions before the Chargers got one point back at the foul line to make it 55-54 in Berks' favor with 1:16 to play. On the ensuing possession, Abbie Carr got an offensive rebound and Herman drilled a jumped from just beyond the foul line to put Berks ahead by three. The Chargers missed a 3-pointer and Herman made 1-of-2 shots at the foul line to extend the lead to four (58-54) with 23 seconds left. Lucente hit her four 3-pointer of the game to cut the Berks lead down to one point with 19 seconds on the clock. Daddona sunk a pair of free throws to go back up by three points and Herman recorded a steal around mid-court to prevent the Chargers from getting off a game-tying attempt. Herman, who was instantly fouled after the steal, made both her foul shots, putting Berks up 62-57 with 12 seconds left. Carr sealed the victory with a blocked shot on a 3-pointer with 4 seconds to go.

Herman recorded a team-high 21 points to go along with eight rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots, and one steal in 40 minutes of action. Daddona followed with 13 points, while also adding seven boards, three steals, and an assist. Kristen Burdo chipped nine points, grabbed seven rebounds, and handed out a team-high four assists, while Kopcik added a season-high seven points. Sam Brensinger had six points, including a clutch 3-pointer in the final seconds of the half to give the Nittany Lions some momentum heading into the break. Carr was held scoreless on offense, but made a big impact with a team-high 10 rebounds and two blocked shots, in addition to her strong defense underneath the basket. Schratt finished the game with four points, three boards, and an assist.

Caitlin Hickey led the Chargers with 21 points, while Lucente followed with 13. Hickey record 17 points in the first half, but the Berks defense held her to four points on just 2-of-4 shooting in the final two quarters. Courtney Goyak notched a double-double with her 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Berks won the battle of the boards by a 43-37 margin, while LBC had 12 turnovers and the Nittany Lions had 16. After shooting 26.7% (8-of-30) in the first half, Berks made a significant improvement of 48.4% (15-of-31) in the second half to finish the game at 37.7% (23-of-61). In addition, they had their second best showing at the free throw line this season with 85.7% (12-of-14). The Chargers shot 39.5% (15-of-38) in the first half, but were held to a 26.7% (8-of-30) in the second half. They shot 33.8% (23-of-68) for the game and went 66.7% (6-of-9) from the charity stripe.

With the victory, the Nittany Lions earned the season sweep over LBC for the first time ever and now hold a three-game winning streak against their nearby conference opponents.

The Nittany Lions will host the College of Saint Elizabeth in a NEAC contest on Saturday, January 19 at 1 p.m.
