Strong second half leads women's basketball to win over Wells

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team was propelled by a strong second half in a 69-55 victory over Wells College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Crossover contest on Sunday afternoon at the Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions (4-7, 3-3 NEAC) led 14-10 after the first quarter, but the lead was cut down and Berks had just a two point advantage (26-24) at the halftime intermission. Out of the break, the Express (2-12, 1-4 NEAC) trailed by nine points midway through the third period, but were able to pull within one point (35-34) with 3:26 left in the quarter. The Nittany Lions outscored Wells by an 11-5 margin over the remainder of the frame to build a seven point cushion (46-39) entering the last quarter. Berks were ahead by 14 points around the midpoint of the quarter, but the Express clawed by to within eight (63-55) with 2:26 left. Sam Brensinger followed with a jumper and Julia Bookwalter added four points down the stretch to secure the victory for Berks.

Kylie Herman notched her third double-double of the season after recording team-highs of 19 points and 14 rebounds. The junior guard also had four assists and one steal in 39 minutes of action. Deanna Daddona followed with 16 points to go along with six boards, three assists, and one steal. Abbie Carr tallied a season-high nine points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor, while also grabbing five rebounds. Bookwalter registered eight points and six boards, while Brensinger had seven points and dished out five assists. Kristen Burdo added six points and six rebounds in the winning effort.

Shelby Medovich led the Express with 23 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Miranda Mingen chipped in 13 points, eight boards, six assists, and two steals, while Maritza Scharoun collected a team-high 10 rebounds.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Lancaster Bible College for a NEAC contest on Wednesday, January 16 at 5:30 p.m.
