Women's basketball topped by Keuka

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team suffered a 72-65 setback to Keuka College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Crossover contest on Saturday afternoon at the Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions (3-7, 2-3 NEAC) made their first five shots of the game - including three 3-pointers - to jump out to an early 13-8 lead. They later closed out the opening quarter by an 8-5 margin to hold a 21-13 lead heading into the second quarter. The Wolves (9-3, 4-0 NEAC) responded with a much better performance, outscoring Berks by 10 points to take a 32-30 lead into the halftime intermission. Out of the break, Keuka expanded its advantage to five points (53-48) going into the final period.

Kylie Herman drained a 3-pointer to pull the Nittany Lions within three points (62-59) with 4:56 to play. The defense then forced a turnover and Deanna Daddona made a layup to make it a one point game with 4:05 left. The Wolves got a layup of their own to go back up three, but Kristen Burdo added a layup to make it a 64-63 game in Keuka's favor. The Wolves closed the final 2:30 of play on a 8-2 run to secure the victory.

Herman turned in a strong all-around performance with 16 points and eight boards, which were team-highs, while tying for the team-lead with five assists, three steals, and three blocked shots. The junior guard did the bulk of scoring damage in the second half, where she was 5-of-9 from the field and tallied 12 points.

Daddona and Sam Brensinger both chipped in 14 points. Daddona was 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, while Brensinger connected on 3-of-6 from long distance. That duo, along with Herman (2-of-2 from 3) combined to shoot 63.6% (7-of-11) from downtown. In addition, Daddona had five assists, four boards, and three steals. Brensinger collected three rebounds and dished out three assists.

Burdo went 3-of-5 from the field and 2-for-2 at the foul line to finish with eight points to go along with three rebounds and three steals. Julia Bookwalter chipped in seven points, three boards, and swatted three shots. Sophomore Abbie Carr picked up four points, five rebounds, three assists, and two blocked shots.

Jariah Johnson and Lauren Anten tied for a contest-best 19 points to power the Wolves. Anten connected on 5-of-9 shots from 3-point land. Johnson pulled town 10 boards to record a double-double.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a home game against Wells College on Sunday, January 13 at 12 p.m.
