Men's soccer shuts out SUNY Poly

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team earned a huge win with a 2-0 shutout over SUNY Poly in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improve to 4-5-1 overall and 2-3 in the NEAC, while the Wildcats fall to 3-2-2 on the season and 2-2 in conference play.

Benjamin Alonge got on a breakaway just 1:48 into the contest, but goalkeeper Gerardo Sosa came off the end line to defend and forced the shot to go to the left and into the post.

A couple minutes later, Tyler Brown ripped a line drive that was deflected up over the crossbar by the keeper to give Berks a corner. Off of the corner, Brenden Valverde worked around a couple of defenders and put a shot on net, but the keeper was again ready to make the save.

Both teams had a couple of scoring chances over the next 20 minutes, but neither were able to capitalize. Sosa made two more saves in that stretch and did a great job of intercepting Wildcat crosses into the box.

But at the 33:04 mark of the opening period, Alex Williams made his way toward the goal with the ball when the defender pulled him down inside the box to force a penalty kick. Valverde converted the PK with a line drive into the top right corner of the net to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead.

The second half saw both teams exchanging a couple of scoring opportunities, but Trent Johnson was there to make the stops for Berks and Nathan Laughlin did the same for the Wildcats.

In the 80th minute, Luke Romanoski was taken down from just outside of the box to give the Nittany Lions a free kick. Valverde took the kick and placed a shot over the keepers head just under the crossbar in the upper right corner for a 2-0 lead.

Johnson made a back-to-back saves on a breakaway and an attempt on the rebound to keep the Wildcats off the board with a little over a minute remaining in the contest.

The Wildcats outshot Berks by a 16-11 margin (10-6 on goal) and both teams managed eight corner kicks. The Nittany Lions finished the game with 10 saves, seven by Johnson and three from Sosa. The goalkeepers turned in solid performances to record the clean sheet, but they were helped by the strong defensive play from Jakob Fischer, Brennan Scheetz, Galen Raab, and Orion Mathias.

This was the Nittany Lions second win all-time over SUNY Poly and the first since a 3-2 victory in double overtime against the Wildcats on October 19, 2014.

The Nittany Lions will host SUNY Cobleskill in a NEAC contest on Sunday, September 30 at 3 p.m.
