Early PK dooms Nittany Lions against No. 6 Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, MD - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 heartbreaker to No. 6 ranked Johns Hopkins University in a non-conference contest on Wednesday evening at Homewood Field.

The Nittany Lions fall to 4-3-1 on the season, while the Blue Jays improve to 8-1 overall.

After nearly a two-hour lightning delay, the teams finally got into action with a light rain fall. The opening minutes of the game saw back-and-forth action in the midfield before JHU worked a corner kick in the 10th minute. The Blue Jays put a shot on net, but Bristol Pizzuto was there to make the stop.

In the 15th minute, Berks was whistled for a foul in the box that rewarded the home squad with a penalty kick at the 15:20 mark of the game. Emily Maheras converted on the PK to give JHU an early 1-0 lead.

In the 31st minute, the Blue Jays had a shot bounce of the far left post to just miss another goal. Berks quickly got collected the ball of the post and transitioned ahead to an offensive attack. Caitlin Golden ripped a line drive from outside the box that hit off the keepers hand and then slammed off the crossbar to narrowly miss tying the game at 1-all.

Pizzuto made a save a little over a minute later and neither team generated any scoring chances for the remainder of the half.

JHU had a few shots in the start of the second half that were off target and one that was saved by Pizzuto.

In the 66th minute, Berks went on the attack and appeared to have a goal when Alexis Schoener sent a ball from the end line and Monica Pinel deflected into the goal. However, the ball was whistled out at the end line to give the Nittany Lions a corner kick instead of the tying score. Off of the corner kick, Karina Raykova had a header go wide and Charlotte Pizzuto had a shot blocked by a defender inside the box.

The teams exchange some scoring opportunities down the stretch, but neither could find the back of the net as JHU hung on for the 1-0 victory.

Bristol Pizzuto gave a stellar effort as she finished the contest with six saves in net, while her counterpart Caitlin Hendricks made three stops for the Blue Jays.

Berks received solid play out of its defensive unit consisting of Shelby Baker, Megan Jardine, Raykova, Jess Mandeville, and Adara Enrique. The midfield play of Alexa Lopez, Charlotte Pizzuto, Schoener, Julia Green, and Emily Clapper turned in strong efforts on both the defensive and offensive ends of the field. Golden, Pinel, and JoJo Zolli were solid up top creating an offensive attack against one of top teams in the country.

JHU outshot the Nittany Lions by a 16-6 margin (7-3 on goal) and held a 5-2 advantage on corner kicks.

This was the second defeat by just one goal against a national ranked team in the last 11 days. Berks suffered a 3-2 setback to then ranked No. 12 Swarthmore College on Sunday, September 16.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a pair of NEAC contests this weekend. They will host SUNY Poly on Saturday, September 29 and SUNY Cobleskill on Sunday, September 30.
