Men's soccer topped by Gallaudet

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 setback to Gallaudet University in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions drop to 3-5-1 on the season and 1-3 in the NEAC, while the Bison improve to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first half. The contest was played pretty evenly in the first 45 minutes, with the Nittany Lions putting one shot on net and Gallaudet recording two.

In the second half, the Bison had three shots and three corner kicks over the first eight minutes. Berks was able to generate some offense and had a strong scoring opportunity in the 54th minute, but Alex Williams shot sailed just wide of the goal in the 54th minute. The Bison were able to break through with a goal at the 55:58 mark of the contest when Chad Johnson flipped the ball up over a defender and then snuck it past the keeper.

Berks had a chance to tie it in the 60th minute when Orion Mathias was taken down in the box to set up a penalty kick. The Nittany Lions PK was snagged out of the air by Gallaudet goalkeeper Shane Angel to keep Berks off the board.

Over the next 20 minutes of play, the Nittany Lions had five shots on goal, but Angel was there to make the stop on each of them. In the 82nd minute, Johnson struck again for Gallaudet after a cross in the box by Tim Artinian setting up the score.

Angel finished the contest with seven saves for Gallaudet. Trent Johnson had six saves and Gerardo Sosa made one stop for the Nittany Lions.

Berks returns to action with a home NEAC contest against SUNY Poly on Saturday, September 29 at 3 p.m.
