Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Nittany Lions fall in final seconds to No. 12 ranked Swarthmore

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team had its hope of an upset dashed when No. 12 ranked Swarthmore College tallied a goal with 46 seconds remaining on the clock to pick up a 3-2 victory over the Nittany Lions in a non-conference contest on Sunday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (2-2-1) led for the bulk of the contest after Caitlin Golden recorded the first score of the match at the 32:16 mark of the opening period. Alexis Schoener played the ball ahead to Golden, who ripped a line drive with her left foot into the top right corner to go up 1-0.

The score would remain that way into the halftime intermission and through early part of the second half. The Garnet (5-0-1) put together a nice attack and Caroline Coats played a ball across the box to Sydney Covitz that was tapped into the right side of the net to even the score at 1-all in the 62nd minute. Just over four minutes later, Marin McCoy had a shot stopped, but she collected the rebound and placed it inside the right post to go up 2-1.

Berks continued to put pressure on the Garnet defense and were able to force a corner kick in the 82nd minute. Monica Pinel delivered a perfect insert that bounced off several players from both teams. Golden was able to get her foot on the ball and toed it into the open net to even the score up at 2-2.

Over the next few minutes, play stayed even in the midfield until Swarthmore was able to put a shot on target that was saved by Bristol Pizzuto in the 87th minute. A minute later the Garnet had a shot attempt that sailed way over the crossbar and out of harms way. With under one minute to go, Swarthmore controlled the ball around midfield and McCoy placed a curling line drive into the far back corner to net the go-ahead goal with just 46 seconds to play.

Golden turned in a phenomenal effort and in the process become the all-time leader in points with her two goals scored today. She raised her total to 183 points (79 goals, 25 assists) to surpass Lizzie Mummau (2013-16) who had 181 points.

Pizzuto finished the contest with four saves in each half for eight total, while her counterpart Chantal Reyes made two saves (both in the second half).

The Garnet outshot Berks by a 15-8 margin (11-4 on goal) and both teams had four corner kick opportunities.

The Nittany Lions will travel for a NEAC contest at the College of Saint Elizabeth on Wednesday, September 19 at 2 p.m.
