Women's volleyball sweeps home tri-match

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball stayed hot with a pair of wins at a home tri-match on Saturday afternoon at the Beaver Community Center. Berks defeated Penn State Abington, 3-0, in a conference tilt to start the day and then prevailed with a 3-2 triumph over Notre Dame of Maryland University in the later match.

Berks has now won four consecutive matches to improve to 4-7 on the year and 2-0 in the NEAC, while Abington drops to 2-11 overall and 0-2 in the conference. The Berks win over Notre Dame (Md.) handed the Gators their first loss of the season as they move to 10-1 overall.

Against Abington, Berks took the first two sets by a score of 25-20 and won the clincher by a 25-22 margin. Megan Lackman recorded a season-high 13 kills, while only committing one error on 28 attempts. Maddy Kessler chipped in nine kills and Abbie Carr had six. MacKenzie Reed handed out 27 assists and tallied eight digs. Madison Wojciechowski collected a contest-best 18 digs, followed by Jenna Plitnick (10) and Natalie Dwyer (9).

In the match with the Gators, Berks jumped out to a 2-0 lead with wins of 25-12 and 25-20. Notre Dame (Md.) countered with wins of 25-16 and 25-19 to even the match at 2-all and force a decisive fifth set. The Nittany Lions, who were 0-3 on five-set matches entering the day, jumped out to an early lead and finished off the set by a score of 15-9.

Dwyer recorded a career-high in both kills (14) and digs (16) to help lead the Nittany Lions to the thrilling victory. Kessler gave a solid all around performance, recording eight kills, four service aces, three block assists, and two solo block. Wojciechowski had a team-best 25 digs to go along with three aces and six assists, while Reed notched 23 assists.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a non-conference home contest against Albright College on Monday, September 17 at 7 p.m.
