Women's soccer plays Dickinson to scoreless draw

CARLISLE, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team saw a couple of scoring chances come up just short as the Nittany Lions played to a scoreless draw with Dickinson College in a non-conference contest on Wednesday evening.

Berks had three shots bang off of the crossbar and another nine shots stopped by the Red Devils (4-1-1) goalkeeper. For the match, the Nittany Lions (1-1-1) outshot Dickinson by a 17-16 margin (9-5 on goal) and held a 10-5 advantage on corner kicks. Unfortunately for Berks, it did not translate to any goals in 110 minutes of action.

The best scoring chance for Berks in the opening half came when Alexis Schoener's shot went over the keeper's head, but hit the crossbar at the 39:04 mark. Early in the second half, Megan Jardine had the same unlucky bounce with a shot from beyond the box.

Not long after Jardine's shot, the Red Devils worked the ball down to their end of the field and were able to get a breakaway. Elizabeth Krause came dribbling in and Bristol Pizzuto came off the line and was able to deflect the shot with her outstretched leg to keep the game knotted at 0-all in the 59th minute.

The Nittany Lions had six shots and four corner kicks in the final 30 minutes of regulation, but just could not find the back of the net. With than 30 seconds remaining, Caitlin Golden worked down the end line and passed a ball through the box to Schoener, who had her shot blocked by a Dickinson defender.

In the first overtime, Dickinson had one shot on goal stopped by Pizzuto, while Monica Pinel and Schoener both had their shots snagged by Mary Katherine Brosnan. Dickinson had a shot go wide early in the second overtime, but the offense belonged to Berks for the rest of the period. Golden had a shot sail high and the Nittany Lions recorded three corners in the final two minutes. The Dickinson defense were able to fend off the pressure in that time to solidify the scoreless draw.

Pizzuto finished the contest with five saves for the Nittany Lions, while Brosnan tallied nine stops for Dickinson. Berks received strong performances from the defensive unit of Shelby Baker, Karina Raykova, Jardine, and Jess Mandeville. Charlotte Pizzuto, Alexa Lopez, and Emily Clapper provided solid play in the midfield on both offense and defense. Julia Green, JoJo Zolli, and Adara Enrique came off the bench to give valuable minutes.

The Red Devils won last year's matchup with Berks by a 1-0 margin, the other three meetings between the two have all ended in ties.

The Nittany Lions will host Penn State Abington in a NEAC contest on Saturday, September 15 at 1 p.m.
