Women's volleyball tops Penn College in NEAC opener

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team picked up a 3-0 victory over Penn College in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener for both teams on Tuesday evening at the Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions earned their first win of the season after claiming set scores of 25-19, 25-9, 25-13.

The teams exchanged leads in the early going of the first game and were deadlocked 10-all. Berks used a 6-0 run to gain breathing room, but the Wildcats battled back and eventually trailed just 19-17. Berks closed out the match with a 6-2 run to take an early 1-0 lead in the series.

The second game had a pair of service aces from both Abbie Carr and Ashley Morris to build an early 10-3 lead. A few play later, Madison Wojciechowski went on a service run that included four aces of her own. MacKenzie Reed also notched an ace and the Nittany Lions closed out the set on an 11-3 run.

The Wildcats closed their deficit to four points (11-7) in the third game, but a collective effort by the Berks offense and defense to take control of the contest.

Abbie Carr and Natalie Dwyer tied for the team-lead with six kills apiece, followed by Lackman with five. Carr added three block assists and one solo block, while Abbie Tuel chipped in a solo block and block assist. Reed dished out 21 assists and Wojciechowski led the Nittany Lions with 13 digs. The team collected 14 service aces, led by Wojciechowski (6), Morris (3), Dwyer (2), and Lackman (2).

With the 13 digs this evening, Wojciechowski became the all-time career leader in digs at Berks with 1107.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Immaculata University for a non-conference contest on Wednesday, September 12 at 7 p.m.
