Women's volleyball drops two on opening day

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team opened up the 2018 season with a 3-0 setback to McMurry University and later suffered a 3-2 heartbreaker to St. Mary's College of Maryland in the nightcap during the first day of the Virginia Wesleyan Invitational on Friday. On the second day of the tournament, the Nittany Lions lost to host Virginia Wesleyan and Randolph-Macon by a score of 0-3.

In the four contests to open up the season, freshman Natalie Dwyer compiled a team-high 17 kills, while also adding two solo blocks and 28 digs. Abbie Carr recorded 16 kills, one ace, five solo blocks, and five block assists. Maddy Kessler followed with 12 kills, while the trio of Megan Lackman, Madison Hetrick, and Jenna Plitnick all tallied 10 kills. Freshman MacKenzie Reed racked up 69 assists, 27 of which came in the five-set match with St. Mary's, while also adding two aces and 24 digs. Madison Wojciechowski finished the weekend with a team-best 37 digs and eight service aces. Ashley Morris and Abbie Tuel both had two kills, while Morris also picked up 21 digs.

The Nittany Lions will host Delaware Valley University in the home opener on Wednesday, September 5 at 7 p.m.
