Men's soccer opens up season with draw against Wilkes

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team opened up the 2018 season with a 1-1 draw against Wilkes University in a non-conference contest on Friday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions and Colonels squared off in the season opener last season, with Wilkes prevailing 3-2 in overtime.

The two teams had a couple of opportunities in the first half, but neither was able to find the back of the net. Berks was able to generate some offense in the second half when Brenden Valverde was taken down for a foul just outside of the box. After a free kick, Orion Mathias headed the ball from the left post to the right side where Tyler Brown was waiting. Brown headed the ball just under the crossbar into the top right corner to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute.

The Nittany Lions were clinging to that lead until the 79:04 mark, when a penalty kick was called against Berks. Kyle Bentz was able to convert on the PK to even up the score at 1-all.

The Colonels worked one corner and had a shot go wide in the first overtime period. Goalkeeper Trent Johnson made a game saving stop when he came out of net to thwart a one-on-one breakaway. In the second overtime frame, Wilkes was able to scratch out two corner kicks, but neither team was able to put together a solid chance for the win.

Johnson finished the contest with seven saves, including six in the second half. His counterpart, Tim Gallagher, recorded a pair of saves for the Colonels.

Wilkes outshot the Nittany Lions by a 17-6 margin (8-3 on goal) and held a 12-4 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will host Albright College in a non-conference contest on Sunday, September 2 at 1 p.m.
