Baseball splits regular season finale with Keuka

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. - The Penn State Berks baseball team suffered a 5-4 defeat in nine innings in the opener, but bounced back with an 8-1 victory in the nightcap to salvage a split with Keuka College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Kuhl Field.

The Nittany Lions move to 22-10 overall and 17-1 in the NEAC, which places them as the regular season champions and hosts of the conference tournament next weekend. The Wolves now sit at 18-15 on the season and 11-6 in the conference. They are the No. 4 seed in the standings and will host a First Round game on Tuesday, May 8.

In the opener, Berks jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the top of the first inning. Keuka responded with two runs in the bottom of the first and took a 4-3 lead after scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. The Nittany Lions evened up the game with a run in the fifth inning and the score would remain that way until Keuka plated a run in the bottom of the ninth.

Tyler Comport finished 1-for-3 with two RBI, while Dante Salerno was 2-for-4. Cory Fox, Dalton Hughes, and Toby Welk all had one hit and scored a run.

Jameson Glass pitched the first 3.1 innings of the game, surrendering four runs (two earned) and striking out one batter. Jon Davis allowed just one hit in 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, followed by Brandon Griesemer with 3.2 innings and one run allowed.

In the second game, Comport was 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBI, and three runs scored. Tyler Kreitz was 2-for-3 with a double, one run scored, and two RBI, while Damian Mace also finished 2-for-3 and drove in a run. Mason Pennypacker had one hit and drove in two runs.

Alex Laudenslager picked up the victory with a complete-game effort. The freshman right-hander scattered five hits and allowed one unearned run, while striking out four batters.

Next up for the Nittany Lions will be the NEAC Tournament, which will take place on Friday, May 11 through Sunday, May 13.
