Baseball opens up NEAC Tournament with shutout win over Keuka

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team opened up the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Tournament with a 16-0 victory over visiting Keuka College on Friday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions (23-10) got on the board early with the help of a two-run home run to left field by Toby Welk. Pearce Harhigh brought in a run with a sacrifice fly to center field in the second inning after Eric Gale moved Mason Pennypacker up to third with a sacrifice bunt. Austin Madeja drove in two runs with an RBI single and Berks pushed another two runs across the plate after a pair of Keuka errors to build a 7-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Berks then combined to score nine runs between the fifth through eighth inning.

Tyler Comport turned in a solid performance on the pitcher's mound. The senior right-hander scattered seven hits in 8.0 innings of shut out ball, while striking out seven batters. Drew Skrocki pitched a 1-2-3 ninth with a pair of strikeouts.

Madeja finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI, while Welk went 3-for-5 with a double, a homer, three RBI, and one run scored. Dalton Hughes and Pennypacker each recorded two hits and combined to score five runs. Dante Salerno and Cory Fox both had one hit, one run scored, and one RBI.

In the other first round game, Penn College rallied late for a 3-2 victory over Penn State Abington. Abington and Keuka will play in an elimination game at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning, followed by Berks and Penn College at noon.
