Baseball heading to NEAC Championship for eighth straight season

READING, PA - Sean Pavlik was dealing and Pearce Harhigh provided the offense as the Penn State Berks baseball team defeated Penn College, 3-0, to advance to the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Championship for the eighth consecutive season.

The Nittany Lions improve to 24-10 on the season, while Penn College is now 20-14 after beating Penn State Abington in the final game on Saturday afternoon.

Berks got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Dante Salerno reached on a throwing error and Austin Madeja followed with a single to right field. Damian Mace loaded up the bases when his sacrifice bunt attempt went for a hit down the third base line. Harhigh stepped to the plate and lined a single down the left field line to score Salerno and Madeja.

The Nittany Lions added to that lead with one run in the bottom of the fourth. Mace led off with a single, but was erased from the bases when Harhigh reached on a fielder's choice. Cory Fox singled to right center and Harhigh hustled from first to third on the play. Dalton Hughes did his job with a grounder to second base to score Harhigh from third.

Those three runs were enough for Pavlik, who carried a no-hitter into the top of the eighth inning. The junior right-hander tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout to pick up his fifth win of the season. Pavlik struck out four batters and walked just two.

With two outs in the top of the eighth, Noah Esposito lined a single to right field for the first hit of the game. Nate Lowe followed with a double to right center to put runners on second and third, but Pavlik forced a ground out to Toby Welk at third to end the inning.

In the ninth, the Wildcats got the leadoff batter on with a four-pitch walk. The runner moved up to second base on a wild pitch, but Pavlik corrected his control issue with a strikeout for the first out of the inning. He followed that up with another strikeout for out two, before hitting the next batter to put runners on the corners. With the tying run at the plate, Pavlik got a line out to Harhigh at second to end the game.

Pavlik received strong support from his fielders throughout the game. Welk finished the game with seven assists, while Harhigh had five assists and four putouts. Harhigh finest play of the game was a running catch in shallow right field on a looping liner to start to the seventh.

Tyler Comport and Mace both went 2-for-4 at the plate and Harhigh was 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Welk went 0-for-0 after getting walked three time - two intentionally - and being hit by a pitch.

The Nittany Lions will face Penn College in the title game on Sunday, May 13 at 10 a.m.
