Welk powers Nittany Lions to sweep of Lancaster Bible

LANCASTER, PA - Toby Welk combined to go 6-for-8 with three home runs, 11 RBI, and four runs scored to help lead the Penn State Berks baseball team to a sweep of Lancaster Bible College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Nittany Lions won the first game by a 7-1 margin, before taking the second game by a score of 16-7.

Berks has now won four straight games to improve to 9-7 on the season and 4-0 in NEAC play, while the Chargers drop to 10-8 overall and fall to 0-3 in the conference.

Jameson Glass turned in a stellar performance on the mound in game one to earn his first win of the season. The freshman right-hander was able to locate his fastball all game, which led him to striking out a season-high five batters. Glass scattered six hits and allowed just one unearned run, while issuing three walks.

The Chargers got the first two batters on in the fourth inning behind a single and a Berks error. Glass got the first out of the inning with a strikeout, but a walk to the next batter loaded the bases. Berks committed its second error or the inning to allow a run to make it 3-1 with bases loaded and just one out. But Glass kept his composure and recorded another strikeout, followed by a a groundout for a force out at second base to escape the jam.

Welk finished the opening game 2-for-3 with one RBI, two runs scored, and a home run that was crushed well over the fence in left center field. Mason Pennypacker notched the first home run of his collegiate career with a solo shot to right field in the top of the sxith inning. Dante Salerno went 2-for-3 with a run scored and three stolen bases.

In the second game, Welk matched his career-high, which is also a single-game school record with 10 RBI. The junior third baseman finished 4-for-5 at the plate, with two homers - including a grand slam - and scored two runs. Welk recorded a three-run homer in the top of the third and delivered a two-run single in the fifth. He then added his grand slam in the 7th for his seventh round tripper of the season. Welk finished off his productive day with an RBI single in the eighth inning.

Cory Fox set the table all game for Welk, going 3-for-4 with two walks, an RBI, and four runs scored. On all four of the runs scored by Fox, he was driven by Welk. Tyler Comport went 2-for-5 with a double, one RBI, and two runs scored. Pearce Harhigh walked twice and scored three times. Salerno, Harhigh, and Pennypacker all finished the game with one stolen base.

Brandon Griesemer earned the win after going the first 5.2 innings of the game. The junior left-hander scattered eight hits and allowed six runs, while striking out one batter. Jon Davis came on for the final 3.1 innings en route to the first save of his career. Davis allowed only two hits and one run during his relief appearance.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Albright College for a non-conference contest on Wednesday, April 11 at 4 p.m.
