Nittany Lions stay hot with sweep of Cazenovia

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team had its offense banging on all cylinders and the starting pitching was solid as the Nittany Lions topped Cazenovia College, 14-1 and 26-8, for a sweep of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions have now won six straight contests to improve to 11-7 overall and 6-0 in the NEAC, while Cazenovia falls to 5-12 overall and 1-5 in the conference. Berks pounded out 39 hits, including 11 for extra bases, and scored 40 runs in the two games combined. Cory Fox finished the day 6-for-7 with two doubles, six runs scored, two RBI, and a stolen base to pace the offense.

In the first game, Berks got on the board early with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and added three more in the third for a 5-0 lead. The Nittany Lions broke the game open with five in the fifth and a four spot in the sixth.

Starting pitcher Tyler Comport was staked with more than enough run support as he was cruising throughout the game. The senior right-hander scattered seven hits and allowed one run, while striking out nine batters and issuing just two walks. Comport (4-0) has won all four of his outings this season and sports a 0.67 ERA with 34 strikeouts in 27.0 innings of work.

Fox went 4-for-4 at the plate with four runs scored, a double, and stolen base. Dalton Hughes did not have a chance to put a ball in play as he drew a career-high four walks, while also scoring four runs. Toby Welk was 2-for-3 with one double, two RBI, and two runs scored, while Brandon Griesemer finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, and two runs scored. Dante Salerno had a hit and drove in two runs, while Mason Pennypacker chipped in an RBI double.

In the second game, all nine of the Nittany Lions starters recorded at least one hit. Comport notched a career-high four hits in five at-bats, while adding two walks, three RBI, and three runs scored. Hughes, Griesemer, and Pennypacker all tallied three hits and the trio combined for seven RBI and eight runs scored. Fox, Tyler Kreitz, Tate Yergey, Salerno, Damian Mace, and Seth Endy all recorded two hits apiece. Nick Esz had a double and drove in a pair of runs.

On the mound, Sean Pavlik earned the victory after going 6.0 innings with three runs (one earned) allowed on five hits. The right-hander finished the contest with eight strikeouts. Calen Reigner, Matt Wagner, and Chase Endy combined on the final three innings of relief.

The Nittany Lions will look to continue on their winning ways as they host Wells College in a NEAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 14 at 1 p.m. The baseball program will team up with softball, men's and women's tennis to host their annual Spring Pink Game fundraiser with all proceedings benefiting the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.
