Baseball opens up NEAC action with sweep of Gallaudet

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Penn State Berks baseball team opened up North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play with a sweep on the road over Gallaudet University at Hoy Field on Friday afternoon. The Nittany Lions overcame an early deficit for an 11-6 in the first game, before winning 3-2 in the nightcap which was called in eight innings due to darkness.

Berks pulled to .500 on the season at 7-7 and starts out league play 2-0, while the Bison drop to 3-19-1 overall and 0-2 in the NEAC.

In the opener, the Nittany Lions took advantage of a couple Gallaudet miscues for a pair of runs in the top of the third. The Bison responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and went ahead 5-2 with three runs in the fourth. Berks scratched out four runs in the top of the fifth, but Gallaudet got one run back to make it 6-all at the end of five. The Nittany Lions pulled away with two in the sixth and three more in the seventh, while holding the home team scoreless over the final two frames.

Brandon Griesemer led the Berks offense, going 3-for-5 with two triples, one run scored, and a career-high five runs batted in. Toby Welk finished 2-for-3 with a double, two walks, two RBI, and three runs scored, while Dalton Hughes went 2-for-2 with three walks and career-best four runs scored. Austin Madeja went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored.

Sean Pavlik tossed the first 4.0 innings of the game, scattering eight hits and allowing five runs and striking out three batters. Alex Laudenslager pitched the final 3.0 innings on the way to picking up his second win of the season. The freshman right-hander allowed only three hits and one run, while striking out one batter.

In the second game, Berks was clinging to a one-run lead before getting the offense going with three runs in the top of the ninth to go up 6-2 with a runner on second and no outs. However, as the game dragged on and the sun began to set, the game was called due to darkness and reverted back to the last completed full inning.

Tyler Comport picked up the win on the mound with his first complete-game of the season. The senior right-hander scattered four hits and allowed two unearned runs, while striking out nine batters. For the season, Comport sports is 3-0 with a 0.45 ERA, .121 batting average against, and 25 strikeouts in 20.0 innings of work.

Dante Salerno's speed on the base path's helped the Nittany Lions put up two of their runs. Salerno walked in the top of the second and the pitcher's pick off attempt sailed wide and allowed Mason Pennypacker to score from second base for the first run of the game. Austin Madeja later followed with a single into the right centerfield gap to score Salerno.

Berks got its final run of the game in the fourth inning beginning with a leadoff walk by Pennypacker. He moved up to second base on a wild pitch and came around to score on a throwing error during a sacrifice bunt by Salerno.

The Bison got two runs in the bottom of the seventh and had the were threatening with the tying run on base, but Comport got a strikeout looking to end the inning.

In what proved to be the last inning, Comport struck out the leadoff batter and force a groundout to Salerno at short. The next batter kept the game alive with a single up the middle, but Comport got a fly out to center to end the inning.

The Nittany Lions will take on Lancaster Bible College in a NEAC doubleheader on Sunday, April 8 at 1 p.m.
