Welk homer caps comeback win over Abington

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team found itself in a 3-0 hole before even coming to the plate against Penn State Abington on Saturday afternoon. But Berks methodically chipped away at the deficit over time and pulled out a come-from-behind 4-3 win in a much needed North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) victory. Berks was leading 5-0 in the second game, but after an hour-plus of delay the game was called. The game will be made up tomorrow afternoon and will be restarted from the beginning.

With the game one victory, Berks improves 18-9 overall and 13-0 in the NEAC, while Abington drops to 22-8 on the season and 11-1 in the conference

Toby Welk landed the knock out punch with a blast well over the left field fence to give Berks a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning. Jameson Glass picked up the win on the mound with 3.0 innings of one-hit, scoreless relief. The freshman right-hander struck out three batters, while issuing one walk. In the top of the seventh and two outs, Abington was threatening with runners on second and third and the batter sent a ball back up the middle. Glass was able to knock down the comebacker, track it down behind the mound, and fire to first base in time to secure the victory.

In the top of the first inning, Abington started out with a walked batter, a double, and a hit batter to load the bases. Abington jumped out to a 3-0 lead after a pair of walks forced in two runs and a sacrifice fly to right field. Following a walk, the bases were again loaded before starting pitcher Tyler Comport got a much needed strikeout. The next batter poked a one-hopper to the right side of the infield that second baseman Pearce Harhigh laid out for and was able to get the final out at third base, while also saving two runs from scoring on the play.

In the bottom half of the inning, Welk had a two-out double to left center and Brandon Griesemer followed with an RBI single through the right side of the infield to make it a 3-1 game.

Berks got another run back in the bottom of the third when Griesemer laced a double down the left field line to move Welk up to third base. He then came in to score on a sacrifice fly to center field by Mason Pennypacker.

By this time, Comport had settled in at the plate and kept Abington off the board of the next three innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Austin Madeja led off with a double to left field and advanced to third when he beat the throw to third on an sacrifice bunt attempt by Eric Gale. With the tying run on third, Harhigh delivered just what the team needed by lofting a ball to center field. Madeja raced home from third and dove into home ahead of the relay throw to even the game at 3-all.

Glass then entered the game in top of the fifth, where he got a strikeout looking and a pair of groundouts to keep the momentum in Berks' favor. Welk then led off the next inning with his shot to left, which was his team leading ninth of the year.

Griesemer finished the day 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Welk was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Dante Salerno also went 2-for-2 while adding a sacrifice bunt. The offense recorded three sacrifice bunts and added two sacrifice flies.

Comport finished the game with just one hit allowed and three runs surrendered, while striking out four in 4.0 innings of work. Glass allowed just one hit - an infield single - in his 3.0 scoreless relief innings.

Berks was rolling in the second game, unfortunately it will not count as the game will start over tomorrow from the beginning. Damian Mace picked a runner of second base in the first inning and Sean Pavlik let up just one hit over 3.0 innings. Welk smacked a two-run homer to center and Cory Fox had a three-run shot to left field to give Berks an early 5-0 advantage.
