Baseball finishes off sweep over Penn State Abington

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team defeated Penn State Abington, 8-1, in a make-up of yesterday's rained out contest to earn a North Eastern Athletic Conference sweep on Sunday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

Berks improves to 19-9 overall and 14-0 in the NEAC, while Abington drops to 22-9 on the year and 11-2 in the conference.

Berks was leading 5-0 yesterday, but a lightning delay and then rain showers caused the game to be stopped. Due to NCAA rules, the score was wiped clean and the make up would start over from the beginning.

Sean Pavlik, who was solid in his three innings on Saturday, picked up right where he left in his start today. The junior right-hander scattered six hits and allowed just one run, while striking out three in 6.0 innings. Pavlik won his third straight decision to improve to 3-1 on the season and has lowered his ERA to 3.89.

Alex Laudenslager tossed the final 3.0 innings of relief to pick up his first career save. The freshman right-hander only allowed one base runner (hit batter) and struck out three hitters during his outing.

At the plate, Damian Mace swung the hot bat for Berks going 3-for-4 with a career-high four RBI. The senior catcher is riding a six-game hitting streak, in which time he has gone 9-for-18 to raise his batting average to a .273 clip.

Dante Salerno added two hits, while Tyler Comport and Mason Pennypacker both had a hit, scored twice, and drove in a run. Cory Fox had a hit and drove in the other run for Berks.

In the second inning, Comport reached base on a leadoff error and Salerno followed with a bunt single. Pennypacker put down a sacrifice bunt with two strikes and the bases were loaded when the pitcher's throw to get Comport at third was late. Mace came to the plate and made Abington pay by lining a single to left field to score Comport and Salerno. Pearce Harhigh moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt and Fox singled to center field to bring home Pennypacker to give Berks a 3-0 lead.

Abington threatened in the top of the fifth with a pair of infield singles. The second of which found the base runner retreating back to third to beat a rundown, which allowed the batter to advance to second on the play. With runners on second and third, Pavlik forced a grounder to Salerno at short to leave the runners stranded.

Berks went to work in the bottom half of the fifth with five runs coming in to build a comfortable cushion. Dalton Hughes led off with a walk and Toby Welk was hit by a pitch. Brandon Griesemer squared around and put down a sacrifice bunt that went for a single and loaded up the bases. Comport roped a line drive over the shortstops head to drive in the first run. After a dropped foul ball, Salerno took advantage of the miscue by sending a sacrifice fly to center to score Welk. Pennypacker doubled over the right fielders head to score Griesemer. Mace drove in a pair of runs with a line drive over the third baseman's head down the left field line.

The Nittany Lions will close out the regular season with two NEAC doubleheaders up north next weekend. They will face Penn College on Saturday, May 5 at 1 p.m., followed by Keuka College on Sunday, May 6 at 12 p.m.
