Baseball sweeps Cobleskill on Senior Day

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team stayed red hot with a sweep of SUNY Cobleskill in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The Nittany Lions took the first game 14-1 and finished off the day with a 28-0 win in the second game.

Prior to the start of the first game, the Nittany Lions honored seniors Tyler Comport, Cory Fox, Pearce Harhigh, and Damian Mace, who have all been four-year members with the program. In between games, the team presented former student-athlete Alex Doyle with the bat that he used to hit the game-winning 3-run home run against Salisbury University at the 2016 NCAA Regional Tournament.

Berks received solid pitching from its starters and relievers, who combined to allow just seven hits and one run in the two games. In addition, the pitcher's racked up 13 strikeouts while issuing only five walks.

In the opener, Jameson Glass (3-2) tossed 5.1 innings of two-hit ball to earn his third straight win on the mound. The freshman right-hander gave up just one run and struck out a season-high seven batters. He had a no-hitter going into the fifth inning before surrendering an one-out double to Nate Carinci. Justin Butler pitched 1.2 innings of relieve, allowing only one hit and striking out two batters.

At the plate, Berks recorded four runs in the first inning and added five more in the second to jump out to an early 9-0 lead. They tacked on two runs in each of the next two innings and finished off the scoring with a run in the bottom of the sixth.

Comport was 3-for-4 with one double, one home run, two runs scored, and a career-high four RBI. Toby Welk finished 2-for-4 with one triple, three RBI, and two runs scored. Fox and Dalton Hughes both scored three times, while Brandon Griesemer notched two sacrifice flies and drove in three runs. Harhigh walked twice and scored two runs.

Alex Laudenslager turned in another dazzling performance on the pitcher's mound to earn the win in game two. The freshman right-hander gave up just one hit - an infield single in the top of the fourth - in 7.0 shutout innings. He finished with just one strikeout, but did not issue any walks as he improved to 4-0 this season. Drew Skrocki had three strikeouts in one inning of two-hit relief. Chase Endy pitched the ninth inning, allowing one single and getting a double play to Calen Reigner to end the game.

Welk finished the contest 4-for-4 with three runs scored, while Dante Salerno was 4-for-5 with two RBI, three runs scored, one stolen base, and two sacrifice flies. Comport was 3-for-4 with a triple and three runs scored and Griesemer went 2-for-4 with a 3-run homer to right field and scored twice. Fox, Pat Maloney, Tate Yergey, and Seth Endy each registered two hits, while Mace and Yergey both recorded three RBI. Nick Diciacco, Cory Melchior, Tyler Kreitz, and Nick Esz all had a hit and drove in a run.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Muhlenberg College for a non-conference contest on Wednesday, April 25 at 4 p.m.
