Baseball scores in bunches in sweep of SUNY Poly

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team received strong pitching efforts and the offense pounded the ball all day in a sweep over SUNY Poly in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The Nittany Lions took the first game by a score of 13-4 and followed with a 15-3 victory in the second game of the twinbill.

Berks now sits at 15-8 overall and 10-0 in the NEAC, while the Wildcats drop to 8-12 on the season and fall even at 2-2 in conference play.

In the opener, the Nittany Lions did all of their scoring in the first four innings. They jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a single by Dante Salerno to score Dalton Hughes and Toby Welk in the bottom of the first. Mason Pennypacker stole third and scored on a throwing error to give Berks a 3-1 lead in the second inning. Berks added four runs to its lead in the third with Pennypacker driving in two runs with a double crushed over the left fielders head. The Nittany Lions put the game out of reach with a six-spot in the fourth after recording four hits and taking advantage of four errors in the inning.

Pennypacker finished the game 1-for-2 with one double, three RBI, two runs scored, two walks, and a career-high four stolen bases. Brandon Griesemer finished 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored, while Salerno went 2-for-3 with two RBI, two runs scored, and two stolen bases. Welk had one hit and scored three runs, while Hughes scored twice.

Tyler Comport (5-0) won his fifth straight decision with six solid innings of work. The senior right-hander allowed three hits and surrendered four runs (three earned), while striking out six batters. Jon Davis worked the seventh inning, giving up two hits while not allowing any runs.

Sean Pavlik turned in a dominant performance on the mound in game two with eight innings of two-hit, shutout ball. The junior right-hander carried a no-hitter through four innings, but John Andrews broke it up with a lead off single to right center to start the fifth inning. Pavlik finished the game with six strikeouts, five of which caught the batter looking. He improves to 2-1 this season with a 4.40 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 28.2 innings pitched.

Matt Wagner worked the ninth inning to seal the win for the Nittany Lions.

Berks jumped out to an early lead with seven runs in the bottom of the second inning and two more in the third. After scoring one run in both the fourth and fifth, the Nittany Lions finished off their scoring with four in the sixth.

Griesemer was 3-for-5 with three RBI and Welk went 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Cory Fox and Hughes both recorded one hit and scored three runs apiece. Pennypacker also scored three times, while finishing 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs batted in. Damian Mace was 1-for-1 with two walks, a double, two runs scored, and one RBI. Pearce Harhigh finished the game 2-for-2 with two RBI.

The Nittany Lions will host SUNY Cobleskill in a NEAC doubleheader on Sunday, April 22 at 12 p.m. Prior to game one, Berks will celebrate Senior Day.
