Baseball has win streak halted by Arcadia

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team had its eight-game win streak snapped in an 11-1 setback to Arcadia University in a non-conference contest on Wednesday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions fall to 13-8 on the year, while the Knights improve to 20-8 overall.

Arcadia scored a pair of runs in the top of the first, but the Nittany Lions responded with one in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Damian Mace. The Knights scored a run in the third and widened its lead with three more in the fifth. They put the game out of reach with a combined five runs over the final three innings of play.

Starting pitcher Ben Wanner tossed a career-high 4.2 innings and matched a personal-best with two strikeouts. Justin Butler struck out one batter in 1.2 innings of relief, while Drew Skrocki had three punchouts in 1.2 hitless innings. Chase Endy threw the final inning of relief for the Nittany Lions.

Berks got its lone run in the second inning after Dante Salerno got hit by a pitch and stole second base. Mace then lined a 1-2 pitch to center field to bring Salerno around from second. The Nittany Lions got a rally started in the fourth inning, after Tyler Comport reached on a single up the middle with one out. Salerno followed with a push bunt between the pitcher and the third baseman for a single and Mason Pennypacker roped a ground ball through the right side of the infield to load up the bases. But starting pitcher Phil Pierfy got back-to-back strikeouts to leave the runners stranded.

The final hit of the afternoon came off the bat of Toby Welk, who beat the four-man outfield with a deep double to left centerfield in the fifth inning.

Berks returns to action with a pair of NEAC doubleheaders at home this weekend. They will host SUNY Poly on Saturday, April 21 at 1 p.m., followed by SUNY Cobleskill on Sunday, April 22 at 12 p.m.
