Baseball runs win streak to eight, sweeps Wells College on Saturday

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team continued to put up runs in bunches as they downed Wells College, 20-1 and 11-4, in a sweep of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions have now won eight consecutive games to improve to 13-7 on the season and 8-0 in the NEAC, while the Express fall to 10-11 overall and 0-6 in conference play.

In the opener, Jameson Glass turned in his finest performance of the season on the pitcher's mound. The freshman right-hander tossed 6.0 innings of three-hit, shutout ball with a career-high six strikeouts. Glass only allowed two batters to reach third base during his outing. He is now 2-2 with a a 2.22 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 24.1 innings of work this season.

Toby Welk recorded his team-leading eighth home run of the season when he smacked a grand slam to left center to cap a six-run second inning. Berks tacked on two runs in the third with an RBI triple by Dante Salerno and a sacrifice fly by Mason Pennypacker. Eric Gale had an RBI double, Pearce Harhigh drove in two runs with a single, and Dalton Hughes plated a run with a sacrifice fly in a four-run fifth inning. The Nittany Lions finished off the game with an eight spot in the bottom of the sixth.

Salerno had a career-day going 5-for-5 with one double, one triple, one stolen base, four runs scored, and two RBI, while Harhigh matched a career-best going 4-for-4 with with a stolen base, two runs and four RBI. Welk and Gale both recorded two hits, drove in two runs, and scored a run. Hughes was 2-for-4 with a stolen base and two runs batted in.

Freshman Alex Laudenslager also had a phenomenal performance on the hill after carrying a no-hitter into the top of the seventh inning of the second game. The right-hander struck out a season-high eight batters, while finishing with seven hits surrendered and four runs allowed. Laudenslager is now 3-0 with a 5.68 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 19.0 innings of work. Drew Skrocki finished with two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth inning.

Berks jumped ahead 3-0 in the bottom of the first, when a single up the middle by Pennypacker scored Hughes and Comport, while an error allowed Salerno to reach home on the play. They added two more runs in the third when Tyler Kreitz singled home Comport, followed by a double steal of second and home by Kreitz and Salerno.

Fox had an infield single to start the fourth and scored on a triple down the right field line by Hughes. Welk drove in Hughes with a sacrifice fly to center to make it a 7-0 lead for Berks. An inning later, Harhigh plated Pennypacker with a single up the middle.

The Express broke through with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, but Berks got one run back after a leadoff homer to deep left field by Kreitz in the bottom half of the inning. Wells added two more runs in the eighth to make it 10-4, but an Express error and an RBI ground out by Seth Endy put up two more runs on the board for Berks.

Six different batters recorded two hits for Berks, with Pennypacker and Kreitz also driving in two runs. Hughes finished with a game-high three runs scored, followed by Welk and Salerno with two runs each.

The baseball program teamed up with the men's and women's tennis squad as well as softball to host their annual Spring Pink Game. The four teams combined to raise $618.69, all of which will benefit the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.

The Nittany Lions will host Arcadia University in a non-conference contest on Wednesday, April 18 at 3:30 p.m.
